First Appearance: Comic Book Mafia #2
Description: Dr. Mauer is a comic book letterer and mad scientist who has been supplying the Lead Pipe Organization with specialized weapons, armor and comic book supplies for several years. Married to a music school teacher and father of a son, Dr. Mauer’s mind cracked when his son’s first (written) words were “I love Comic Sans” – which the little tyke wrote into his mashed potatoes at age 1, lettering Comic Sans perfectly.
He’s been trying to unlock the mysteries of the dark calligraphic arts ever since to “cure his son of this madness,” finding allies in CB and Tony D for this endeavor. His loyalty maybe tested as he suspects there is a mole within Lead Pipe. Whether his loyalties lie with the publishing gangsters or his strange agenda remain to be seen.
Name: Tony D
First Appearance: Comic Book Mafia #1
Description: Tony D is the Enforcer for the Lead Pipe Organization. Known for his maniacal violence against fanboys and retailers that stiff him, he is the “crazy one” that the comic book publishing families know not to cross. Based on comic book publisher, Tony DiGerolamo, Tony D was once a wide-eyed, naive publisher looking to do good. Unfortunately, after the General’s daughter broke his heart, he turned bitter and violent, blaming the fanboys in part for destroying their relationship.
As a key member of Lead Pipe, Tony D also makes his share of deals, but while CB’s tend to be large and overt, Tony D’s are almost all very shady and some have not monetary value at all. When one fanboy suggested because this was Tony D’s love of comic, D nearly beat him to death with a cardboard standee of Mr. Freeze from the Joel Schumacker Batman movie. Like CB, Tony D has a long history, but being a self-taught publisher, D had to make a lot of mistakes (and enemies) along the way as he climbed to the top.
Name: CB
First Appearance: Comic Book Mafia #1
Description: CB is based on the real life comic book publisher, Christian Beranek, and is an exaggerated version of his real personality. As the CEO and face of Lead Pipe Entertainment, CB maintains a pretty solid front as a legitimate comics publisher. Spending most of his days drinking vodka, cavorting with his Asian bodyguards and making huge comic book deals, he keeps the money flowing into the Lead Pipe Organization.
CB initially learned many of the arcane secrets of comic book publishing from his mentor, The General. Unfortunately, the General returned to try and kill him using Manga Comic Book Maneuvers. But CB, having surpassed his master by also learning American Comic Book Martial Arts, defeated the General with the aid of the rest of his cohorts.
Rumored to have started one of the biggest variant cover counterfeiting schemes on the East Coast, CB’s vast fortune is constantly being drained due to the lack of profitability of all comic books. Although a gangster at heart, he does live by a code of CB “ethics”, which currently involves not sleeping with Lead Pipe interns. Whether or not his hedonistic lifestyle will lead him to break this promise remains to be seen.
