My grandfather ran a trapline for years only stopping in the late 60’s when he got too old, skunk pelts got a pretty high price. The smell doesn’t last forever and is a problem only if you’re not careful skinning them or the skunk sprayed in the trap and they usually don’t 🙂
Really? What kind of stuff did they make out of them, I wonder? Hats?
Skunk fur was very popular in some places, especially Europe.
It’s warm and sleek, was plentiful and worth as much as muskrat and lasted as long as mink or beaver, but thanks to the demonization of fur in general by people who have no idea what they’re talking about demand died out for fur in general and North American furriers didn’t seem to want to work with it like the European ones did, probably out of some notion the public would go eeewww for no reason.
Neat info! Thanks!
