Ahh, those greencard lottery ads I used to see? Were they for real, or were they just meant to trick desperate people into installing malware?
In the fifth panel there seems to be a “one” missing: “… or every(one?) will turn into a commie!”
And how do you know that whatever the US military is doing with social media isn’t working? Obvious manipulation is obvious, but what about when it’s done so well that you don’t notice it?
And “if you’re honest and on the side of freedom and democracy, there’s no need to control social media” sounds a lot like “if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear”. I think we can all agree that the world isn’t a just place, so being on a certain side does not guarantee a certain treatment.
I do of course see something morally wrong with trying to manipulate social media, so thank you for shining some light on this. 🙂
Fixed!
Greencard lottery ads? I’m not sure what you mean. We did get hit by a bug, which stayed on the site for a while until we figured out how to remove it. Maybe that was it.
Well, I look at like this: America is not a product I need to be convinced to buy. You don’t wake up one day and say, “I was really on the fence about this whole freedom thing, but recent advertising has sold me.” I think it’s more akin to “actions speak louder than words”. Someone who is honest shows that by being honest and forthright. There’s no need for him to “control the message” because his honesty IS the message. And sure, being on a certain side, doesn’t guarantee certain treatment. And there are people who certainly THINK they are on the side of freedom and liberty, but do horrible things. But I think if you’re on the “correct” side of history, that’s really your only defense. It certainly doesn’t mean you’re going to skate in terms of treatment by other people. (See the White Rose.) But manipulation is misleading and propaganda is ultimately a lie.
Manipulation can work for a while. But eventually, people find out and when they do, they react strongly the exact opposite way of your intended propaganda. So in the long wrong, whatever your cause, you’re hurting it by this behavior.
Oh, the greencard lottery ads were not on this site. It was just something I used to see years ago. “Come and work in USA” and stuff like that. I thought that maybe that was the kind of stuff you were referencing in the last panel, since the US military may well have been at this for some time.
