I have never been to an arcade in my life. So no. I can’t name the game.
But I’d like to file a complaint regarding the speech balloons in the last panel: They confused me, because I read left to right instead of top to bottom. If the first balloon had been top-left and the second balloon had been bottom-right that would never have happened.
Though perhaps the clever idea this time was that my eyes would go to the top balloon immediately from the second panel, and read that before looking at the panel itself? Eh. I’m easily confused.
Good call, Gill. Fixed!
The game (and I’m showing that I’m a real olde tyme gamer by saying this) was Zaxxon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHORFz6ZCC0
As you’ll see from the link, the game frequently required you to pull up, so players would often pull up on the joystick instead of back, which was how you moved the ship up. I pulled the joystick right out off the machine one day during a trip to a carnival arcade.
LOL. Dude, Zaxxon was a classic game from way back! I have an older cousin who used to be like the Zaxxon champ at an old neighborhood arcade back home (which for obvious reasons does not exist anymore) when we were kids. If he ever had to put that damn bandanna on his head, you were in trouble. I hate that I could never never beat him because he liked to taunt and belittle you in front of hot girls that were watching…so I hit him in the jaw and ran. I knew he’d get me later on but then I didn’t care. LOLOLOL! Good times; we laugh about it now…
Me, I was more the Galaga, Gyrus& Robotron-type champ. B-)
My favorites included Xevius, Robotron, Berserk and Time Pilot.
