Discussion (3) ¬
I have a few problems with your line of thought:
1. The government will always have more weapons than its people.
2. In America, you are more likely to shoot a family member or kill yourself than to use your gun to defend yourself from government. Look up the stats.
3. If the people in Catalonia who want leave Spain should take up arms, shouldn’t the people in Catalonia who want to stay in Spain do the same?
4. If people use guns to defend themselves against evils of government in Catalonia, why should other groups do the same. Should Blacks in America take of arms against the police brutality they face everyday? Should the Native America take up arms to reclaim their lands stolen by your people? Should the South arm themselves and try again to leave the Union?
The people of Catalonia are not oppressed by Spain unlike Blacks and Native Americans in America. Given the history of systemic oppression and brutality and imprisonment of Blacks and Native Americans, they would have every right to take up arms against the government. The people of Catalonia do not.
Spain has given the people of Catalonia the right to pretty much run themselves. This problem can be solved without the use of guns…
1. I’m not sure this is an issue in the comic or the commentary. But decentralization is something I endorse, as well as privatized police forces and armies. I think that would even the playing field enough so that no one entity could just run over the rest of the country.
2. Well, as always, this is a misleading statement proffered by gun control advocates. Many of the gun deaths are suicide related, but those deaths are much MUCH higher than the deaths from OTHER family members. And the “more likely” scenario is also misleading. Guns are dangerous weapons. Of course you’d be more likely to be shot. There’s a gun RIGHT THERE. You’d also be more likely to die of poison if you stored lots of poisons at your house.
And you’d be more likely to die from a sword if you were a sword collector. The danger doesn’t just jump off the wall because it’s a gun. There has to be human motivation behind it. Guns don’t make that motivation an more or less likely to happen. And that’s irrelevant to the discussion of safety. Prisoners aren’t allowed guns. How safe is the inside of a prison?
If you want to walk around in this world defenseless, you’re free to do so. Why do you get to dictate what the rest of us do? Why should the rest of us, who see gun ownership as a bulwark against government tyranny, have to “test” your theory by completely disarming ourselves? There’s plenty of countries that will happily disarm you.
3. So how do the people living outside of Catalonia have the same right to force Catalonians to stay? Do you not believe in the concept of self-rule? The Catalonians voted peacefully to leave. Why shouldn’t they be allowed?
4. I don’t think you understand what being armed means. It’s a deterrent. People don’t strap on a gun one day and say to themselves, “Oh, boy! Can’t wait to shoot someone!” They usually buy it for self-protection and/or to go target shooting or both. I think you’d find a lot less harassment by the cops if open carry laws were very common. Why shouldn’t a cop think twice before harassing someone? Why is the cop different? And a gun levels the playing field for potential women and elderly victims of violent street crime. Native Americans DID take up arms and tried to retake their land. If they had access to better technology, they probably would have held more land.
The people of Catalonia are not oppressed by Spain? By what metric do you measure that? Self-rule is a natural human right. To send cops to beat peaceful protesters isn’t oppression? Since when? And you’re comparing widely disparate groups of people. The Catalonians have had their own culture for centuries in Spain. Were they not oppressed by a fascist dictator for decades?
