In the first panel I think “discus” should be “discuss”. At first I honestly thought there was some place called Discus where the topic of drone warfare came up, but that wasn’t it.
And as long as people are willing to let the ‘others’ get killed without trials or repercussions, perhaps it wouldn’t be fair to the kids to teach them some pretend-morals that don’t apply in the real world? Then again, I guess that’s the only way to change the morals of the human species.
Fixed!
Yeah, I think you’re right. Until a new generation comes in and stops it, it’s mostly going to continue.
I just read an article saying that Joe Biden is calling in people from the games and film industries to discuss how violent media affects gun violence in society. That’s rich, considering that people working for the government are playing computer games with real guns and bombs. The government is setting a very poor example by showing that if you have a problem, it’s acceptable to solve it with lethal violence.
That being said, it seems quite plausible that the glorification of gun violence would cause more gun violence. But the way I see it, that glorification doesn’t originate with the media. It seems infused into the spirit of USA. Possibly due to the glory days of muskets, six-shooters and WWII? The glory days of Europe and Asia seem mostly related to swords and lances, and those aren’t quite as dangerous or easy to use. Maybe one day there’ll be weapons and defenses that make guns obsolete, and maybe then USA can have more peace?
Well, yeah, Biden being a politician will pretty exploit any moment in the news for his own power. But like a lot of people, he has it backwards. Art is a reflection of society, not the other way around. When I was a kid, detective crime dramas would always be infused with some hippie message of peace because it was popular at the time.
Freedom is a tough thing for people to handle. It’s easy to solve your problems by creating a law that, for instance, puts all the guns in the hands of the government. Because now all you have to do is complain about how the government badly handles guns and that seems a lot smaller than dealing with individuals that have individual and unique problems handling guns.
Most gun violence in the US stems from drugs and street gangs. Something like 74%. That’s a huge chunk. Now imagine that drugs were legalized in the U.S. Suddenly, those street gangs either have jobs or they no longer have the money or need for guns. In a generation, guns would evaporate off the streets because street gangs and organized crime would have to adapt to some other crime.
It’s just like Prohibition Chicago in the 20’s only it’s the entire country. When liquor was legal again, crime stats plummeted.
If you want to make guns obsolete, remove the reason why most people buy guys.
