That process actually happened to me and my son when we were apartment hunting. I am of slight build so I guess I can be mistaken for a guy. I was wearing a red baseball cap & he was wearing a black shirt. We were walking down the street when the cops pulled over and made us sit down on the ground. They said a heist had been pulled off at a biz next door to where we had just been, and we matched the description of the perps. A taller guy in a black shirt and a shorter guy with a red baseball cap. They shook my backpack, and commented on how heavy it was. Turns out the heist was somone making off with a nearly full jar of quarters for some charity. They searched my backpack, I had about $3 in quarters. I explained that we were looking for apartments, showed him the newspaper with some ads circled. They let us go. We think the “heist” was actually an inside job, and after the employee stole the jar, and someone noticed it was missing, they called the cops and randomly pinned us, as we happened to be walking by at that time. I should do a comic about it, as my strip is largely autobiographical.

Totally. I think the problem with most stops of this nature is the level of evidence. If a cop has reasonable suspicion that’s one thing, but the threshold for reasonable has gotten lower and lower and lower and people don’t seem to care.
